Clients I work with: Preteens and teens and their families, couples, and adult individuals.
Issues I work with: Communication, anxiety, depression, life transitions, blended families, trauma, low self-worth, shame, body image, substance use, teen families, parenting, affair repair, coping skills, trust, emotional intimacy, connection, and the impact of discrimination and oppression.
My hope is to create a safe and collaborative atmosphere for change by nurturing diversity and inclusion in my work with clients. My aim is to have a positive impact, specifically on the African American community, and all communities, by decreasing the stigma of mental health and create a safe space for people of color to utilize therapy in a way that is relevant and helpful to them.
Much of my approach is underpinned by the belief that we have the power to give meaning to our experiences: to story and live in a way that is authentic to who we are. When our story does not match up with who we are, the disconnect can lead to feelings of discontent, unworthiness, and stress. It can ripple out into all areas of life, impacting our self-worth, identity, relationships, and ability to express or manage our emotions.
I work to earn the trust of my clients by helping them know that their experiences are valid and have played an important role in shaping who they are. Clients experience me as warm and empathetic as they share their experiences and work through their struggles.
I know that trust, empathy, and validation are the building blocks of a satisfying and secure relationship, both with ourselves and our loved ones. Many of us have not experienced these qualities in our most important relationships which may have left us feeling unworthy, unwanted, and distrustful. In addition, we may not have had the opportunity, space, or tools to express how we feel or what we need.
I believe we have the power to give meaning to our experiences. To story and live our lives in a way that is authentic to who we are. I know that sometimes we might also need help with the story we tell ourselves and to ‘undo’ stories that are painful, limiting, overwhelming, or inaccurate.
The way society views an individual may not be true to who they are and the experiences that they have lived through. Often this disconnect leads to feelings of discontent, unworthiness, and stress. I help individuals, couples, and families to narrate or story their life in a way that is authentic, healing, and representative of their whole experience and whole self.
My work with individuals often focuses on life transitions, processing and healing from past traumas, and building tools to help clients cope with life stressors. I collaborate with individuals to help them create a narrative and a sense of self that is authentic to who they are. Often problems and symptoms are created when we see ourselves as is not in line with who society, friends, and family says we should be. I help individuals unlearn who they think they should be and JUST BE. Just being is enough.
My work with couples often focuses on creating a safe space where each partner feels comfortable to be vulnerable and where vulnerability is viewed as a strength. Often couples get stuck in argumentative cycles that push them further apart, create conflict, or touch upon past pain.
As adult humans, it is okay to crave a secure connection with a loved one, contrary to what we may have been taught. In fact, we are wired to connect, lean on, and need our partner. I work with couples to create a new way of connection, one that feels authentic to who they are as a relational system.
I also work with child and teen families to create new patterns of interaction and communication that are more effective and adaptive to their development stage, life experiences, and individual needs. I help families with children and teens find more effective ways to connect, guide, influence, and heal from past hurts or missed needs.
When working with families, I look at the patterns and cycles the family is stuck in and help them create new ways to interact. Often families get stuck in past/generational patterns that were once adaptive but may now have become problematic. As family members change and grow, the way we parent and connect must also change.
I collaborate with families and make it a priority to hear the needs of each person, acknowledge what they need to move forward as a unit, and support new ways to share needs, express emotions, set appropriate boundaries, and heal old wounds.
My work with child and teen clients often focuses on those struggling with self-worth, life transitions, or unresolved trauma, which can often present as anxiety and depression. I partner with the young person to help them find their voice in this noisy world which is often trying to tell them who they are and who they should be, and help them to value their unique skills, personhood, and strengths.
I have worked with teens who have experienced painful traumas or overwhelming experiences in the past and need an outlet to speak and heal. I also work with teens who have experienced oppression and discrimination based on the color of their skin and need space to process those experiences.
I work with individuals of all ages around insecurities dealing with their body. Feelings of shame and disgust often accompany conversation about bodies. In the therapy room, we create a space where we appreciate our bodies, the wisdom they offer, and the things they have experienced. We value the strength that is within us and ways to nurture our innate resilience and healing. We learn and process where these negative feels first began and work towards creating new and more positive experiences.
I received my MS in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon and am currently working towards Licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Previously, I worked with individuals and families living with addiction, provided in-home counseling to children, adolescents, and families, and provided therapy, art, and play-based services to children within the school system. I have also provided couples and family therapy services to those with multiple presenting issues at The Center for Healthy Relationships.
Accepting virtual clients and works with both men and women.
