I am a Clinical and Sport Psychologist, and Owner of Warner Psychology Associates. For over twenty years, I have provided therapies and psychological assessments to athletes, adolescents, college students, and adults.
I help athletes who have on-and off-field distractions to clear their heads, lock in, and perform at their highest level. Athletes and student-athletes are faced with high expectations, and are expected to excel in just about everything they do. While there certainly are rewards, there are also costs and stresses. Balancing school and academics, relating to teammates and coaches, spending time with family and friends, managing family relationships, and establishing interests and an identity outside of sport are all issues that need attention. If not managed effectively, emotions such as anxiety, depression, and anger can show up, and take a toll on sports and the athlete’s overall well-being.
My therapy style is collaborative and strengths-based. I will partner with you to identify what is and isn’t working, set goals, tap into your strengths, and find understanding and solutions that make sense to you. The therapies I provide are personalized and based on your unique identity and needs. Race, culture, all identity factors, and life experiences are valued, and incorporated into treatment for every client. My therapies will help you tap into the root of your problems, build on your strengths, and learn new skills so you can make meaningful change and feel more control in your life.
I tailor my educational and psychological testing to each individual client. My testing answers questions and identifies your strengths and weaknesses. The assessments not only detect the problems and patterns, but also get to the root of the issue. You will leave with personalized, practical, and relevant recommendations and a roadmap to follow. The goal is to improve achievement or adjustment in school, sports, relationships, and personal coping.
EXPERIENCE:
I received my Ph.D. in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1994. I am a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland, and Washington, DC. I also hold a PsyPACT license, which allows me to provide virtual telehealth sessions in over 40 states.
I have provided therapies and psychological evaluations for athletes in many different sports, including basketball, field hockey, soccer, track and field, swimming, baseball, softball, volleyball, football, and ice hockey. I enjoy working with all sports. I work extensively with the University of Maryland, College Park Athletic Department, as well as local universities, and high schools with competitive athletic programs. I am listed on the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Mental Health Directory. The therapies and evaluations I provide take academic, athletic, emotional, and personal variables into consideration; all of these variables impact the adjustment, identity, and success of the athlete.
My career-long focus on schools and learning actively informs the psychological assessments I provide. I have specialized training in providing school-based mental health services. All of my therapy and testing services have some interface with learning. Understanding and tending to all aspects of the school environment, including academic and learning variables as well as emotional, behavioral and social components, are essential to enhancing all students’ well-being.
