ABOUT US

MyBlackTherapistDMV was created in an effort to bridge the gap between black people and black therapists in the DMV area. As a community that is forced to deal with the emotional baggage that comes with hundreds of years of oppression in addition to everyday issues and trauma, it is vital that we are intentional in preserving our mental health. While therapy is often a taboo topic within the black community, it has proven to be an extremely effective self-care tool. We hope that MyBlackTherapistDMV will make black therapists in our area more accessible and the process of finding them more seamless.

OUR MISSION

Our goal is to simplify the process of finding a black therapist in the DMV, so that you can easily start therapy with a practitioner who looks like you. Only about 4% of all therapists in the U.S. are black, and our mission is to help you to find yours more efficiently.

MyBlackTherapistDMV was founded by clinical psychology doctoral student and DMV resident, Chioma Okeke.  After experiencing trouble finding a singular destination for black therapists in her area, she decided to take matters into her own hands and take a crack at creating one herself. She has been heavily immersed in the mental health field for the past 11 years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and has now gone on to pursue a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Her interests lay specifically within child/adolescent psychopathology, neuropsychology, and of course, mental health in the black community. She is an avid mental health and social justice advocate. Chioma believes her purpose on earth is to help improve the lives of others through mental wellness, and she hopes this platform will help her do that.
